Chris Waterman strikes Gold at 2024 Para Pan American Championships

(Chris shown in the above photo, left of Center)

Archery Manitoba Provincial Team Member and esteemed member of Archery Canada’s Nationals Para Team, Chris Waterman, has once again demonstrated his prowess on the international stage. At the 2024 Para Pan American Championships, the premier continental para archery event in the Americas, Chris, alongside his teammate Kyle Tremblay, secured a remarkable victory, clinching the gold medal in the Men’s Double Team Event.

The journey to victory was not without its challenges. Facing formidable opponents, Chris and Kyle exemplified resilience and skill in every match they contested. In their initial showdown against Brazil, they entered as the underdogs. However, through sheer determination and precision shooting, they managed to upset their opponents with a narrow yet decisive victory, triumphing 146-144.

Undeterred by the odds stacked against them, Chris and Kyle faced their toughest test yet in the Gold Medal match against Mexico. Once again labeled as underdogs, they rose to the occasion with remarkable composure and unwavering focus. With nerves of steel and clutch performances, they outclassed their opponents, securing a resounding 150-144 victory and clinching the Gold Medal for Canada.

Their remarkable achievement reflected Chris’s immense pride in representing his country on the podium. “Yesterday, Kyle Tremblay and I took the Gold medal in the Para Men’s Compound Open Doubles at the 2024 Para PanAm Championships in Brazil,” Chris said. “I am so proud to be bringing this medal home to Canada. I would be lying if I said there wasn’t a tear in my eye as I watched our flag being raised to our National Anthem.”

Chris Waterman’s triumph at the 2024 Para Pan American Championships highlights his exceptional talent and dedication and is a testament to the indomitable spirit of para-athletes. His victory brings glory to himself and his teammates and inspires aspiring athletes across Canada and beyond. As Chris soars to greater heights in his archery journey, his achievements serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all.

Manitoba Indoor 3D Championships 2024: A Resounding Success

Sunday, April 14, 2024
Erickson, Manitoba

The 2024 Manitoba Indoor 3D Championships showcased archery prowess, community spirit, and club excellence. Hosted by the South Mountain Archery Shooters & Hunters Club  (SMASH) and Archery Manitoba, this event attracted archery enthusiasts from across the province and Neighbouring Ontario. The influx in interest from various regions of Manitoba resulted in a sold-out capacity of 80 eager competitors, with a substantial waiting list highlighting the event’s popularity.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the championships was the diverse field of competitors. A diverse group of youth to senior archers, and from newcomers to seasoned performance shooters, participants of all skill levels converged to shoot for fun, provincial rank, and awards.

Central to the event’s success were the excellent venue, the host club’s dedication, and the volunteers’ invaluable contributions. The well-planned course provided a challenging yet enjoyable experience for all participants, while the positive efforts of volunteers ensured that every aspect of the event ran smoothly, leaving no archer disappointed.  Archery Manitoba would like to specifically thank the host club, SMASH, and its volunteers.  Special mention to the club leaders and on-site event volunteers Myles Meir, Garett Lewandoski, Brian Schnell, Donald Johnson, Richard Marshall, Brian & Kim Gibbons, and Randy & Margeret Neuls. The club and Archery Manitoba would also like to thank Scott McMunn and his staff at  McMunny’s Restaurant for keeping the archers fueled.

In addition to our wonderful group of club volunteer organizers, the event would not have been a success without our key Archery Manitoba volunteer leaders and judges. Those are our Reed Fowlie, Sean Murray, Kazwel, Cohen and Zaiden Levandoski,  Tom Comberbach, Angela and Syler Anderson Johnson.

Beyond the importance of a provincial competition, the championships fostered a sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship among participants, further enriching the 3D archery community in Manitoba. As the final arrows flew and champions emerged, the resounding success of the 2024 Manitoba Indoor 3D Championships underscored the enduring appeal and vibrancy of 3D Archery in the heart of Canada.

Ryder Wilson is the recipient of the 2024 WW Gunter Memorial Bursary

Article source Archery Canada: https://archerycanada.ca/ryder-wilson-is-the-recipient-of-the-2024-ww-gunter-memorial-bursary/

OTTAWA, ON – The Canadian Archery Foundation is excited to announce that this year’s recipient of the WW Gunter Memorial Bursary is Ryder Wilson of Selkirk, MB.

Ryder’s archery journey began 7 years ago when he joined his local archery club. He began shooting with a compound bow but was informed of the opportunities available to him and switched to a recurve bow early on.

Ryder indicates it was the 2018 Manitoba games experience that “cemented the love I have for the sport.” He attended his first Canadian Outdoor National event in 2022, medalling in all three of the events he shot. He was selected to join Archery Canada’s Next Gen program, under the direction of the Junior national coach, Dr. Soha Mahmoud.

In 2023, Ryder represented Manitoba at the Canada Winter Games where he won gold in the individual male recurve event and with the help of his fellow archers, took home silver in the mixed team event. He travelled to the United States competing against some of North America’s most talented archers at the Vegas Shoot, Arizona Cup and the Buckeye Classic. He was happy to secure a couple of match play victories. He was later selected to compete for Canada at the World Archery Youth Championships in Limerick Ireland. While he didn’t medal at this event, he was happy to win a match at a world event. Ryder is currently ranked the number two U18 male recurve target archer in Canada.

Ryder is planning on attending the University of Manitoba next year where he will study in the faculty of science before entering their nursing program.

The WW Gunter Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually by the Canadian Archery Foundation to a Canadian archer between the ages of 17 and 21, who has competed or will be competing for Canada at a World Championship or international archery competition and who is planning to pursue a post-secondary education. Most importantly, the archer must conduct themselves in a manner that is a credit to their sport, their country, and always maintain a sense of dignity and sportsmanship in victory and defeat.

Donations to the Canadian Archery Foundation are accepted year-round and helps support amateur archery athletes in their quest to represent Canada on the world’s stage.
