Archery Manitoba is pleased to announce Team Manitoba Archery for the Canada Winter Games has been named.

The archers were named following an extensive qualification period consisting of numerous tournaments and matchplay events in the Westman and Winnipeg Regions. All eights athletes selected were ranked in the top 2 of our Canada Winter Games ranking list, that included indoor 18M qualifying events between January 1, and November 27, 2022.

The four archers selected as primary athletes are Emily Love, Ryder Wilson, Chyler Sanders and Ryan Cherniak, selected as their alternates are, respectively, Cleo Wermann-Thorn, Kadin Giebelhaus, Bailey Mathers, and Ethan Hall.  After consideration, Ethan Hall has decided to decline to the Compound Male Alternate spot to focus on his 3D training and competition goals leading him to the 2023 North American Indigenous Games this summer in Halifax.  The remaining seven athletes have committed to high frequency technical and fitness training plans, which includes a Canada Winter Games prep camp and competition in Saskatoon in January.

The current team brings strong performance potential to the games, in keeping with a tradition of Manitoba success at the Canada Winter Games. Love & Wilson, both currently competing in the U18 division have had recent national success with Emily placing 5th in the 2022 Indoor Nationals, and Ryder taking home bronze at this summers outdoor nationals. They are backed up by two U21 division archers in Giebelhaus and Wermann-Thorn, both of who bring strong value in their experience competing at the last Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta in 2019.

Our primary compound archers are both currently competing in the U21 division and have years of experience at the national and international levels. Cherniak has been a member of Team Manitoba for over 6 years and has earned podium finishes at numerous national championships. Sanders, a team member since 2018, has competed at the Manitoba Games, Canadian Championships, Youth Continental Championships and two World Archery Youth Championships. Female Compound Alternate Bailey Mathers is a U18 archer who has a depth of experience in her past several years as provincial team member. Bailey finished 2nd at this summers national championships and attended her first international event as a member of Team Canada at the Youth Pan American Championships.

The Canada Winter Games run from Feb. 18 to March 5 in Charlottetown, PEI. Join us in recognizing the Archery Manitoba athletes, coaches, and volunteers that have made an impact in 2022. The event will be hosted at the Holiday Inn Winnipeg – Airport West in Winnipeg, Manitoba, located at 2520 Portage Avenue on Saturday, January 28. We ask our members and partner clubs to help us recognize deserving athletes, coaches, and volunteers by online nomination by January 3. 2023. 

• Rising Star Award (Male and Female): In recognition of the Manitoba Youth Archers (Cadet & under) with the most outstanding achievement(s) in provincial, national or international archery in the past year. (Target or 3D).

• Glenn Lewer Memorial Coach of the Year Award: Awarded to the Coach who has contributed the most to developing archery in the province of Manitoba during the previous year.

• Roger Garrod Memorial Volunteer of the Year: Awarded to the volunteer who has contributed the most to developing archery within the province of Manitoba during the previous year.

• Judge of the Year: Awarded to the Judge who has contributed the most to archery in the province of Manitoba during the previous year.

• Target Archer of the Year Award (Male and Female): In recognition of the Manitoba Target Archers with the most outstanding achievement(s) in provincial, national or international archery in the past year.

• 3D Archer of the Year Award (Male and Female): In recognition of the Manitoba 3D Archers with the most outstanding achievement(s) in provincial, national or international archery in the past year.

• Presidential Award (doesn’t need to be awarded annually) – Presented to a member of the archery community who has made an outstanding contribution as an organizer at the international, national or provincial level. This award is the highest honor our association bestows. It reflects our deep appreciation of the recipient’s impact on Archery in the Province of Manitoba.

The official results for the World Archery Americas 2022 Multi-Sites Indoor Championships of the Americas (MICA) have been published. More than 3500 archers from across the continent participated in the satellite competition.  Congratulations to the numerous Manitoba Archers that ranked top 30/top half!  Those archers are as follows:

Archery Head Coach Avril Hatherell has been to the Canada Games as an athlete, a manager, and will now experience the event as a coach in PEI.

Involved in the sport for 25 years, one of the things she loves about archery is that it’s a personal sport with lots of room for growth and development.

“It lets you compete with people across the country in a way that you don’t in other sports. And they mix the ages all together when you’re shooting, so you get to shoot with older people and younger people,” said Avril.

Team Toba’s Archers

Four archers—one in each equipment category and each gender—will represent The Herd on the ranges in PEI.

“The equipment categories for archery are recurve, which are the long, Olympic bows that you see,” said Avril. “And then the compound [bows] have pulleys at the top and bottom, which make them faster.”

They’ll also have four alternates for a total of eight athletes who will be training together this winter.

“The team will be decided at the end of November and that’s based on their three highest scores they’ve shot, mostly this fall, or earlier this year,” said Avril.

Once 2023 arrives, they’ll be kicking it up a notch, including planning a training camp with a couple other provinces in the middle of January.

“[They’ll be] getting some more practice with shooting against other people and shooting some match play with people they will probably see at Canada Games. So, getting comfortable with that, also getting them comfortable with shooting somewhere they’re not used to shooting, because that does play a factor as well.”

Post-Games: What’s Next?

The journey for athletes doesn’t need to end at the Canada Games. For many, there are opportunities beyond this event.

For these archers, they could qualify to go to the youth world championships — a really big event typically held in another country.

“We’re talking hundreds of athletes who are all shooting the same categories,” said Avril. “Very different, very fun, and you get to make some really great friendships across the world. And it also kind of prepares you for moving up a category into the senior category, where you’re also exposed to the same thing as well.”

Another opportunity is scholarships!

“We’ve also had a couple of athletes from Winnipeg who’ve got scholarships from the U.S. to go to the colleges to do archery. So I think some of the archers coming up going to the Games would definitely qualify for that, if that’s something that interests them.”

Follow Along

“I think it’s a really great experience for athletes, and it’s something they’ll remember their whole archery careers, or even if they finish with archery and move on, they’ll think ‘Oh yeah, that time that i went to Canada Games and that was so much fun’.”

Nominations for Archery Manitoba Executive Committee Positions have closed. The positions of Secretary, VP Athlete Development, and VP Coaches & Officials received single nominations and the positions will be elected by acclamation. The position of VP 3D Archery has received two nominations and will elected by secret ballot at the AGM. Attendees that have registered for the meeting before Wednesday November 16 will receive an email on the day of the meeting, indicating how and when to vote online during the meeting. Archery Manitoba has been referred to, and will be using electionbuddy.com to facilitate the election.

The purpose of the special general meeting is to amend the Archery Manitoba bylaws. The notable bylaw amendments are include the addition of approved electronic meetings (video/teleconference) for meetings of the member moving forward (SGM/AGM), extending the meeting notice from 14 days to 21 days, and updating of membership categories to reflect the new board approved categories that came into use in 2021. On September 10 & 11  the Archery Manitoba hosted the 2022 Manitoba Provincial Target Championships and Manitoba Open at the Archery Manitoba Sanford Range, southwest of Winnipeg. The event, hosted over two ideal fall days, included a 720 round to determine the Provincial Champions, followed by the combined match play double elimination event, the Manitoba Open. The event drew nearly 30 of the best target shooters in the Province to compete for the title of top Manitoban. Archery Manitoba would like to thank the many invaluable volunteers, including Leonard Budgell, Dave Tissot, James Platt, David Cupples, Greg Rubell, Val Mathers, Bob Tataryn, and Kelly Scrivener for assisting setup, photography and the BBQ.  We would like to send a special thanks to the event coordinator and judges Tom Comberbach, Mike Oneschuk and Chad Sanders for running a top quality and well organized tournament for our archers. The organization would also like to thank the archers and supporting parents for their participation in the event, it was a pleasure to see such a diverse field made up of a variety of all ages, genders and disciplines.

The Archery Manitoba 3D Committee is pleased to announce the appointment of two new members . Jeff Rozmus  and  Francois Squirra have been appointed to committee positions, both with terms ending in May 2024. Both committee members bring a depth of experience and knowledge that will benefit our 3D community in Manitoba.  Jeff has been involved in shooting and hunting for many years and is currently the Manager of Heartland Archery in Winnipeg. Francois is an experienced 3D traditional archer, bowhunter and bowmaker living in the western Manitoba community of Roblin, where he leads a local club.

Archery Manitoba would like to acknowledge and thank the outgoing volunteer committee members that have served the past several years. Thank you to members Brad Hackewich, Colin Richards and Team Leader Dan Hudson for playing a key role in supporting 3D shoots and team programming during their terms.
