On Saturday July 15th the Selkirk Archers & Bowhunters Club hosted the 2018 Manitoba Provincial Target Championships and Manitoba Open in East Selkirk, MB. The event hosted on a hot, windy day, included a 720 Round Event to determine the Provincial Champions, followed by the combined match play elimination event, the Manitoba Open.  Despite the heat and challenging wind conditions, the event drew 37 of the best target shooters in the Province to compete for the title of top Manitoban. The Archers & Bowhunters Association of Manitoba would like to thank Mike Fox, Darlene Cherniak and the rest of the Selkirk Archers & Bowhunters for hosting a top quality event. The organization would also like to thank the archers and supporting parents for their participation in the event, it was a pleasure to see such a diverse field made up of a variety of all ages, genders and disciplines. It is a true indication of all the hard work that clubs in Manitoba are doing to grow the sport of archery.

Thank you to all the volunteers and judges for their support of the event! We would like to specifically recognize our Treasurer Robert Tataryn for running the Manitoba Open and presenting the plaques, our President Vickie Oneschuk for leading the awards ceremony, our VP Coaches & Officials Mike Oneschuk for acting as head judge and member Kelly Scrivener for providing the event photography. EVENT REMINDER: The South East Archers Club will be hosting its first ever Outdoor Target Event this coming weekend in Giroux, MB, near Steinbach, MB at D & G Family Archery Range Ltd. The event will include two 720 Rounds Saturday, followed by a single 720 Round and Match Play on Sunday. Match play ranking will be based off the archers best 720 round score from all three rounds during the weekend.

2018 Provincial 3D Championships

Team Manitoba Archers Austin Taylor, Brady Klassen, Kyle Cherniak & Ryan Cherniak traveled to Sherwood Park, Alberta on the July Long weekend to compete at the 2nd annual Alberta Summer Classic. Joining the team was Team Manager Darlene Cherniak and Manitoba National Judge, Mike Oneschuk. The two day qualification comprised of a two 720 rounds in very windy, cold conditions. Our archers adjusted and shot well with Taylor finishing qualification ranked 1st in Compound Men with a score of 1341. Meanwhile, in the Compound Men Cadet event, Brady Klassen ranked 1st with a score of 1329, followed by Kyle Cherniak in 7th and Ryan Cherniak in 8th with scores of 1169 and 1125 respectively.  In the match play event, Taylor received a bye to the quarter finals before winning three straight matches to take 1st place overall. In the Compound Men Cadet event, Ryan Cherniak had a decisive win in his 1/8 match and moved on to the quarters before losing 108 – 120 to teammate Brady Klassen in the quarterfinal. Meanwhile Kyle Cherniak eliminated shooters from Alberta and British Columbia before meeting Clay Laronde  in the semi-final. Cherniak and Laronde shot a very close match ending with a shoot off, where both archers shot a 9, with clay slightly closer to center. Cherniak moved on to the bronze medal match against Cameron Palichuk, where he fell just short of a win with a close match scored 131 – 132. as the matches closed out, Klassen won in the semi’s with a big score of 135 – 115, taking him to the gold medal final. In the final Klassen shot his best score of the day, taking out Clay Laronde with a match score of 142 – 133 to take 1st place overall.

Congratulations to all the members of the team on their performance in Alberta, you make us proud. Thank you to volunteer manager Darlene Cherniak on a job well done and to Judge Mike Oneschuk for officiating his 3rd National Event in the past year.

2018/2019 ABAM Provincial 3D Team Leader

The ABAM 3D Committee is seeking a candidate to serve in the volunteer role of Provincial 3D Team Leader in 2018/2019. The application process will close end of day, Friday July 20, 2018. The selection of the position will be made by the ABAM 3D Committee on Monday July 23, 2018.

ABAM – Provincial 3D Team Leader

Role & Selection

The Provincial 3D Team Leader will be required to support the ABAM 3D Committee, and Executive Director with planning and athlete management duties associated to team competitions & training events.

The role will be appointed annually by the 3D Committee under an application, review and recommendation procedure. In addition to the program team event planning duties, the 3D Team Leader will assume the role of athlete manager at events identified by the 3D Committee.

In the absence of the 3D Team Leader, Alternate Team Leader Applications per event will be evaluated and selected by the 3D Committee.

Position Term will be July 23, 2018 – Friday April 19, 2019

Qualifications

• Proven ability and experience in athlete, youth and volunteer management

• Demonstrated understanding of 3D Archery competition formats

• Valid Driver’s License

• Valid First Aid & CPR certification

• Valid Sport Manitoba “Respect in Sport” Online Education

• Valid Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Checks (Every 2 years)

• Valid ABAM Staff Agreement

Program Operations & Support

• Work with Executive Director and 3D Committee on Event Administration & Logistics.

• Assist with planning and execution of team training events.

• Assist with communication to athlete and parents regarding program tasks.
• Assist with planning of Provincial Team promotion and recruiting

Program Tasks

• Work with athletes during competitions & training events

• Create and execute a program task list annually

• Scout talent at local competitions and programs

• Assist with promotion of Provincial Team Program Events

• Sit as a full member of the ABAM 3D Committee

Power of Decision

The Team Leader shall participate in meetings specific to the job requirements and will be responsible to make recommendations where necessary. The individual is required to communicate with the Executive Director to have decisions approved by the ABAM 3D Committee.

Reimbursement of Expenses Incurred

The 3D Team Leader will be reimbursed for costs incurred as it relates to travel specific to Team Training & Competition. All Team training & competition events must be approved by the ABAM 3D Committee prior to the date the expenses are incurred.  Locally, mileage will be provided at a rate of $0.35/KM for any travel outside the Perimeter of Winnipeg. Costs incurred as it relates to out of province travel will be reimbursed as determined by the 3D Committee & approved by the Executive Committee.

Funding for travel to national events to be recommended by the 3D ABAM Committee, followed be final approval from the ABAM Executive Committee

The Archers and Bowhunters Association of Manitoba is proud to have had two Provincial Team Archers compete at the 2018 Salt Lake City 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Salt Lake City, Utah, June 18 – 24 . Team Member Austin Taylor competed in the Junior Compound Male Division, while Team Member Bryanne Lameg  competed in the Junior Compound Female Division.

The qualification rounds proved challenging for the entire field with windy conditions. Following qualification Lameg was ranked 35th with a score of 622 and Taylor ranked 20th with a score of 680. In the elimination match play, Lameg was matched against former World Champion Albina Loginova of Russia, who ranked 30th. The close match started with Loginova leading slightly, before Lameg would tie it and fall again in the next end. In the final two ends Lameg pushed hard to close the gap and regained several points but, ultimately fell short with a final score of 141 – 142. On the men’s side, Taylor faced off against Gerardo Rivas (45) of El Salvador and took a decisive win with a score of 147 – 139. In the second round, Taylor matched up against the 13th ranked Romeo Alejandro Trevino Garza of Mexico. The archers went shot for shot staying tied through three ends, until in the fourth end Taylor took a one point lead and held out for the win with a score of 147 – 146. In the third round, Taylor faced off against the 4th ranked archer, Abhishek Verma of India. The first three ends were back and forth as each archer took a slight lead, before a tie led them into the final two ends. As the match closed out, Taylor fell short in the 4th end with a one point deficit, before ultimately losing to the eventual 2nd place archer with a score of 144 – 147. The three impressive rounds of shooting by first time World Cup shooter Austin Taylor ranked him tied for 9th overall, alongside world class shooters Sergio Pagni, Martin Damsbo and Sebastian Peineau. In addition to the individual event, Taylor competed in the Men’s Team and Compound Mixed Team Events for Canada. In the Mens’s Team event, Taylor, alongside teammates Brendan Von Richter and Robert Nott faced off against team Philippines, losing in the first round with a score of 215 – 219. In the Mixed Team Event, Taylor paired up with Saskatchewan Archer, Madison Hart to compete against Team Mexico. After a tight match, Team Mexico edged Taylor and Hart with a score of 152 – 150.

What Does Team Membership Include

Team members must meet the team eligibility requirements listed below under “how to make the Provincial Team” before they can participate in any team events, training or receive travel funding.

1. Participation in Team Training Events as scheduled by the Team Manager(s).

2. Travel Funding to select tournaments. Our priority events being Canadian Championships.

3. One uniform free of cost for first year team members, additional uniforms are $40 each.

How to make the Provincial Team

Archers must meet the minimum qualifying scores (MQS) within the qualifying period

• MQS is the score listed in the team document per category that must be met or exceeded over an average of two (2) Scores. Please note the scores submitted are an average of the archer’s best two (2) scores. All other scores will not be taken into consideration when calculating the average.

• All scores submitted must be from a Sanctioned Event.

• Examples of shoots meeting this criteria are ABAM Sanctioned Tournaments as listed on the Events Calendar, out of province Sanctioned events (determined upon review by the Athlete Development Committee), Provincial Championships, Western Canadian Championships, Canadian Championships, or World Archery & IBO Events.

• The Scores must be within the qualifying period, July 17, 2017 – July 13, 2018.

• Tracking & Submission of scores – All archers are responsible for submitting their two best scores with an average equal to or above the MQS for their category as part of the team registration document. The Document will ask for shoot dates, locations and scores. Please note this data will be verified by ABAM.

Other Requirements

• All Archers that have met the eligibility criteria before the qualifying period deadline are welcome to submit the team registration form (stating that they met criteria), a signed copy of the Athlete Agreement and paid the annual team fees in the amount of $150.

• If you are an archer that has not yet made the team, but expect to meet criteria and/or attend Canadian Championships it is encouraged that you communicate your intent to the ABAM Office or the Team Manger(s).

Additional Information

• Difference between Development & Elite Squad – both squads will be considered team members with the exact same access to training resources and events in Manitoba. Team Squad travel funding may vary depending on the event and team budget.

This past weekend, a group of over 20 Manitoba archers & parents headed to the 2018 Canada Cup hosted by the Timberland Bowbenders Archery Club in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

We are very proud of the 11 Manitoba archers that competed in five of the eight categories. Congratulations to all of the Team Manitoba archers that hit the podium, including Nattasha Shpak (2nd Place – Master/Cadet Female Compound), Brady Klassen (2nd Place – Master/Cadet Male Compound), Robbie Comberbach (3rd Place – Master/Cadet Male Compound), Simon Potrebka (2nd Place – Junior/Senior Male Compound), and Austin Taylor (3rd Place – Junior/Senior Male Compound)

2018 ABAM Triple Crown 3D Tournament Series

THE SERIES

The Archers & Bowhunters Association of Manitoba (ABAM) in partnership with the Selkirk Archers & Bowhunters (East Selkirk, MB), 17 Wing Archery Club (Winnipeg, MB) and Yellowhead Bowhunters (Neepawa, MB) will be hosting a three stage 3D archery tournament series in June & July of 2018.

The ABAM is the Manitoba provincial body for competitive target and 3D archery. Our organization has over 4000 annual program participants and approximately 800 members, the majority of which are recreational and competitive 3D Archers.

This is the 2^nd year for the ABAM Triple Crown Series. Our goal is to continue to grow a premier 3D tournament series for competitive archers and bowhunters in Manitoba, while attracting participants from out of province.

THE TOURNAMENT

All three partner clubs listed will host an Archery Canada Sanctioned Tournament. Provincially certified tournament officials will ensure proper equipment and field play rules are enforced.

Participants will compete within their Archery Canada Sanctioned Category for placement that earn points toward ranking in their ABAM Triple Crown Category. The Triple Crown Tournament Series rules have combined 30 Archery Canada Sanctioned Categories into seven (7) gender specific categories for youth and adults.

Archers can accumulate Triple Crown points in only one category. Archers must participate in a minimum of two (2) Triple Crown stages, including the Triple Crown Championship event (final stage) to be eligible. The top three (3) archers ranked in each Triple Crown Category will win ABAM Championship Medals and have their names added to the Triple Crown Trophy for presentation at our annual awards banquet. In addition, top ranked archers from each category will win grand prizes.

AWARDS & PRIZES

That place 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in overall points after the completion of the Triple Crown Series will be awarded prizes. The top three winners per category, per event will be awarded a certificate. The top three overall winners per category will have their name added to the Triple Crown Trophy of their respective category for presentation at the annual awards banquet in December 2018.  Additionally, the top three overall winners per category will receive ABAM Manitoba Championship Medals upon the conclusion of the Triple Crown Championship event. The 1st place overall winner in each category will receive the cash prize amount listed below.

The Yellowhead Bowhunters, a club with its base of membership living in the Neepawa Area, has a large outdoor range approximately one mile north east of town, along the banks of the Whitemud River. Yellowhead is a long established club with a fast growing membership made up of recreational and competitive shooters. This event and location will be fitting for the final stage, as the event will be combined with the Manitoba Provincial Championships and include camping and social events.

Stage 1: Selkirk Archers & Bowhunters – Saturday June 2, 2018
Selkirk Archers & Bowhunters have a beautiful 3D course situated in a densely forested area in East Selkirk, MB. The club has a long standing reputation for hosting quality provincial and national events. The club has recently played host Manitoba Provincial Target Championships in 2015 & 2016, as well as being the host venue for the 2015 Canadian Field Archery Championships.

Stage 2: 17 Wing Archery Club – Sunday June 24. 2018
The 17 Wing Archery Club, situated at Canadian Forces Base 17 Wing in Winnipeg, MB, is one of Manitoba’s fastest growing archery clubs. The 17 Wing Archery Club was established in 2008 and in recent years has played host to a number of Archery Canada Sanctioned 3D and Target Tournaments. The location of the club offers a densely forested and challenging course within the city.

RESULTS

Details:

Three Triple Crown Events will be hosted annually. There will be three stages, the third and final stage will be the series championships.

Archers must participate in a minimum of 2 Triple Crown events, including the Triple Crown Championship event to be eligible.

Archers can accumulate Triple Crown points in only one category Example: An archer shoots CUM at one shoot, and CFP at another, their points are only accumulated for the class they competed in.

Archers must be an ABAM or Archery Canada member in good standing in order to accumulate Triple Crown points, points will be accumulated in order of placing amongst registered ABAM members at the time of the event.

Events must follow Archery Canada Sanctioned event guidelines.

Point System:

Placement with in the Triple Crown Category per Triple Crown Stage will be based off the each archers score in their given Archery Canada Sanctioned Category.

The top 5 archers at each event in each Triple Crown Category accumulate points based on their placing.

New: Know Distance Category Details

• Know 50 Class was approved as a developmental class, below is a summary of the rules that will be added to the AC rules book.
• Archers will shoot from the Orange stake (50 yard maximum).
• Archers may use any type of bow or equipment so long as it is recognized by another approved Archery Canada 3D Division.
• Class is open to archers of all ages, Cadet and older.
• Marked distances will NOT be supplied to archers in paper form. Rangefinders shall be used by archers to determine the distances.
• As with unknown distance archer(s)/group, there will be no discussion of yardage by a Known Distance archer(s)/group at the shooting stake, or at any time until after the arrows have been recorded/scored at the target. There will be no discussion of yardage with archer(s) that have yet to shoot the target from either Known or Unknown divisions.
• Archers competing in a Known Distance category may NOT shoot in a group with archers from an Unknown Distance category at National Championships.
• At National Championships the Known Distance 50 Class will follow on the same course if room permits Unknown Max 50 yard distance categories. If there is not enough room on the same course then Known Distance archers will shoot on a course the Unknown 50 yard distance categories have previously shot (excluding the first course of the tournament)
