Austin Taylor Named Top Male Junior Athlete in Manitoba
Archery Manitoba congratulates Austin Taylor of Winnipeg on being named the 2019 Male Junior Athlete of the Year by Sport Manitoba.
Taylor, 20, had a year to remember in 2019, winning a gold medal at the Canada Winter Games, gold medals in the Canadian National Target Archery and Canadian National Field Archery championships, winning the 2018 Frank Selke Award as Male Athlete of the Year from Archery Canada and a silver medal at the 2019 World Archery Youth Championship in Madrid.
“Austin’s year was outstanding,” Archery Manitoba president Vickie Oneschuk said. “From his Canada Games gold medal to being named flag-bearer for Manitoba to ending the year as the No.1-ranked compound archer in all of Canada, this award is richly deserved.”
Starting university on an archery scholarship at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky., in the fall, Taylor went on to help his Blue Raiders team win medals at 3D state and national archery championships. At the start of 2020, Taylor qualified in fifth place for the U.S. Collegiate National Indoor Championships, which were to be held March 19 in Louisville, Ky., until all archery events were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Taylor’s win as Male Junior Athlete of the Year marks the first time since 2008 an archer has been recognized by the provincial awards program.
Team Manitoba makes Top 3 and Top 10 at Alberta 3D Provincials
This past February long weekend a small group from the Manitoba Provincial 3D Team made the trip to the Alberta Indoor 3D Championships in Medicine Hat. The intention of participating in Alberta was to offer youth members exposure to larger events. The Alberta Provincials hosted over 200 archers from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Despite the large and talented pool of archers from across western Canada, Team Manitoba camp up big, with both Reid Jonasson and Josten North placing top 3 in their respective classes. Team member Reed Fowlie commented “both are showing a maturity that only comes with shooting larger events. I have had the chance to shoot with both of them during the last year and the strides they have made are remarkable.” Reid Jonasson finished in 3rd place in the male cadet compound class, while teammate Josten North placed 2nd in the male cub compound class. Fowlie indicated it was a great development opportunity for the youth, as they worked during their down time to prepare for the stress of competing and succeeding at larger events.
In addition to the success of the youth team members, Ed Wilson and Reed Fowlie placed Top 10 in a deep Known 50 Class and Brendan Mills made it to the final 10 in the money shoot down that started with with 80+ shooters.
Archery Manitoba would like to thank senior team members (Ed Wilson, Reed Fowlie, and Brendan Mills) for leading the youth archers to success at the event, offering support and mentorship while also competing in the event.

Sport Manitoba: Flag Bearer Alum..One Year Later
Article from Sport Manitoba
By Tara Funke
A year after the 2019 Canada Winter Games, here’s an update on our Team Manitoba Closing Ceremonies Flag Bearer, Austin Taylor.
When his older brother wouldn’t let him use his $20 bow from Canadian Tire, Austin decided he would go out and get his own.
At the time, Austin was just 13 years old and, according to his own recollection, success in the sport came to him pretty naturally. Now at age 19, he has enjoyed competing all over the globe.
Last year, Taylor was proudly sporting a Team Manitoba uniform at the Canada Winter Games where he earned a gold and silver medal. In August, he represented Canada in Madrid at the World Archery Youth Championships. He claimed silver in the compound junior men’s division.
The archer from Winnipeg is the youngest member of the compound senior national team and now attends college in the States. He tells us he is adjusting quite well to his new surroundings at Lindsey Wilson College in Kentucky, and is busy shooting five to six times a week, usually two hours at a time.
He adds weight training to his routine as well and says getting back to school and studying has been more of an adjustment than anything else. Taylor’s calendar of events includes indoor tournaments beginning this month, then his focus will switch to the outdoor season before returning home in May.
We wish Austin all the best!
