2021 Team Manitoba Target Squads Named

Archery Manitoba is pleased to announce the names of the 23 athletes, male and female, who have been selected to represent Team Manitoba as part of the 2021 Target Development and Elite Squads.
The mandate of our Provincial Team Programs is to develop nationally competitive compound and recurve athletes, through coaching, training resources and competition support funding, in alignment with our Long Term Athlete Development pathway. Athletes in the program participate in weekly fitness training, technical practices, high performance camps and have the opportunity to be funded to major national and international events (please note: programming is adjusted for compliance with current Public Health orders).

Austin Taylor
Compound Senior Men
I have been shooting for eight years and competitive for six. I have competed in many international tournaments and my best finish was second place at the 2019 World Youth Archery Championships in Madrid, Spain. My most memorable experience in archery was winning a shoot off for second place in the adult championship category in Vegas. A goal I have for archery is to start to shoot more ASA tournaments in the USA.

I have been shooting for just over two years and competing for almost two years. My highest level of competition are Indoor Target Provincials 2020, where I won gold, Indoor Regionals (2020), where I won silver and Outdoor Target Provincials (2020), where I won gold. One of my most memorable moments in archery is when I found out I made Team Manitoba as it was my goal for 2020. A goal for 2021 is to improve my form and beat my personal best score. A long-term goal is to make Team Canada. I would like to go to the World Archery Youth Championships in Limerick, Ireland in 2023. What I love best about archery is that I love to shoot!

I have been shooting for 9 years and competing for 7 years. My Highest level of competition was the 2017 World Archery Youth Championships (where I finished 17th) and the 2019 World Archery Youth Championships (where I finished 12th). One of my most memorable moments in archery was in 2016 when I received the Athlete of the Year from Archery Manitoba. One of my goals for 2021 is to shoot a 300 30x score. A long-term goal is to place in the top three at an international competition. I would like to participate in the World Senior Championships and the World Collegiate Target Championships one day. What I like best about archery is the feeling of a perfect shot.

I started archery five years ago and have done competition for two and a half years. My highest level of competition was the Outdoor National Championships (2019) in Prince Albert, SK, and also the ISAA Pro-Am Archery Tournament (2019) in Des Moines, Iowa. My most memorable moment in archery was going to the ISAA Pro-Am Archery tournament in 2019. One goal I have for 2021 is to be able to shoot by the end of the indoor season. A long-term goal is to keep shooting with the Manitoba Provincial Archery Team. Someday I would like to go to the Vegas shoot. What I like most about archery is the friendly competition.

I have shot archery from the age of seven until about the age of 16 (1993) when I stopped. In Oct. 2019 I started shooting again. I shot outdoor 3D competitions for ten years as a kid. I started competing again in Jan 2020. My highest level of competition are 2020 Indoor Regionals, where I won a bronze medal, and 2020 Outdoor Target Provincials, where I won a silver medal. My most memorable moment in archery would be my first “Robinhood”. My main goal for 2021 is to improve my scores so that I can go from development squad to elite squad on the Provincial Team. My long-term goals are to continue with Team Manitoba, make Team Canada, and to travel representing my province and country at multiple competitions. What I like best about archery is that for me it is a way to relax and find my center so to speak. You have to have full focus along with full relaxation. It takes a balance of those two states of mind to hit your mark.

I have been shooting since 2014 and I started competitions in 2018. The highest level of competition that I participated in was when I was part of Team Canada in 2019. I participated in the 2019 World Archery Youth Championships in Madrid, Spain. I finished 17th in the individual event. One of my most memorable moments in archery was when I qualified to compete at the World Archery Youth Championships. One goal for 2021 would to be to qualify to compete at the World Youth Archery Championships in Perth, Australia this year (2021). A couple of long-term goals of mine are to shoot a 300 on a Vegas target so I can get on the wall at Heights Archery, and to qualify for a scholarship to go to a university or college that has an archery program. What I like best about archery is the people I get to meet when I go to the various events and getting to shoot with my teammates.

I have been shooting for eight years and competing for six. My highest level of competition was the 2019 Canada Winter Games. Going to the Games was also my most memorable moment in archery. One goal for 2021 is to train as much as possible so that I can be at my best once we start competing again. A long-term goal of mine is to make Team Canada. I’d like ro go as far as I can with archery, where ever it may take me. The best part about archery is shooting with my friends.

I have been shooting and competing for four years. My highest level of competition was Outdoor Canadian National Championships in 2019 and Indoor Provincials Championships. My most memorable moment was when I was at the Manitoba Winter Games in Thompson (2018). I won the bronze medal shooting against someone who had been shooting competitively for years. I had only been shooting competitively for 3 months at that time. One of my goals for 2021 is to start to shoot more consistently. A long-term goal is to try out for the National Team. What I like best about archery is the adrenaline rush, especially during match play.

I started shooting two and a half years ago and have been competing for the last two. My highest level of competition was when I shot in the Alberta 3D Provincial Shoot, where I placed second. I have also got gold in the Manitoba 3D Provincial and silver fir the Field Archery Championships with Flatlanders. My most memorable moment are going on my own with the coach and 3D team to Alberta, and seeing all new people and sites for 3D archery as I go to as many as possible, and this was my first season to try the target archery. One of my goals for 2021 is just have fun. A long-term goal is to be on TV or in the Olympics. What I like best about archery is that everyone is so helpful. It is a great way to meet new friends.

I have been shooting for 5 years. I started competition 3 years ago in 2018. My highest level of competition has been the Canada Winter Games in 2019. My most memorable moments include shooting for Manitoba in the Canada Winter Games (2019) and going winning silver at the Manitoba Games (2018). My goal for the 2021 year is to continue to shoot my best. A long-term goal is that I want to continue to represent Manitoba at future competitions and hopefully one day represent Canada. What I like best about archery is the enjoyment of competition and the pace of the sport.

I started doing archery 18 years ago. I have competed for ten of those years. My highest level of competition was the Paralympics level where I was the alternate for both the 2008 and 2012 Paralympics. My most memorable moment in archery was when I made the team that was going to Korea. In 2007 they were naming the teams for that year’s world archery events and then they said my name for the Para Worlds. All I could do was cry. It was my first year shooting outdoors and to make it to that level, I was overwhelmed. One goal I have for 2021 is to make it to the Paralympics in Tokyo. A long-term goal of mine is that I will still have the upper body strength to make the 2024 Paralympics in Paris, France. Someday I would like to coach an archer to be able to go to the Olympics. What I like about archery is meeting other people and being able to learn from them. It does not matter if you are a beginner or experienced archery, everyone has something that they can learn from each other. Just remember when you put that uniform on you are representing not only your team but your province and country.

I have been shooting and involved in competition for five years. My highest levels of competition have been Indoor Regionals, Outdoor Canadian Target Championship and the Las Vegas shoot. My most memorable moment in archery was winning money in the Las Vegas shoot. Several things of interest about me: I was the first in the youth compound division to win the Manitoba Open, and I was also the first to win it twice! And in 2017, I was the first winner of the youth compound division in the Canadian Outdoor Open, which was held in Quebec. One goal for 2021 is to beat my personal best outdoors (965/720). A long-term goal is to shoot a perfect score indoors. Someday I would like to participate in more international events. The thing I like best about archery is how calming it is when you’re shooting.

My highest level of competition includes 2020 Outdoor Provincial Championships where I got gold, and indoor Regionals (Nationals) where I got bronze as a cub and silver as a pre-cup. One of my most memorable moments in archery was when I participated in the Manitoba Winter Games in 2018. My goal for 2021 is to shoot more frequently and consistently. A long-term goal is to shoot at international competitions. Someday I would like to compete at the Canada Games. What I like most about archery is getting together outdoors with friends to shoot, and also the challenge of archery.

I have been shooting for six years and involved in competitions for five. My highest level of competition is when I went to the 2019 Outdoor Canadian Target Championship where I placed third. My most memorable archery moment was when I shot my first tournament. One of my goals for 2021 is to be more consistent with my shooting. A long-term goal is to work my way up to an indoor personal best score in the 290s. Someday I would like to go to competitions around the world. What I like best about archery is all the places I go for the competitions.

I started in archery six years ago. My first competition was the 2018 Manitoba Winter Games, where I placed 8th. Since then, I have participated in the 2019 Indoor Mail Match, where I won bronze, and the 2020 Outdoor Provincial Championships, where I won gold. My most memorable moment in archery was when I went to the Manitoba Winter Games in 2018. A goal of mine for 2021 is to go to Outdoor Canadian Nationals and a long-term goal is to go to the Canada Winter Games. What I love most about archery is that it is an individual sport. It’s also neat that you can make it onto teams even though it is an individual sport, when you are good enough.

I have been shooting for four years and competing for three. In 2018 I shot in the Manitoba Winter Games. My highest level of competition was in 2019 when I shot the Vegas Shoot and placed 46th out of 102. I shot it again the next year and placed 72nd out of 116. I struggled with nerves on the second day of competition in 2019 after a really strong first day. In 2020 I felt I wasn’t shooting my strongest but I had lots of fun. One of my most memorable moments in archery was when I won bronze in the individual event at the 2018 Manitoba Winter Games. That was pretty much the first time I had tasted what it was like to compete. My teammates and I had won bronze the day before in the team event but doing it by myself felt different. When the judge pointed at my target and said that I had won I burst into tears. I was so unbelievably happy and proud of my self. I ran over and gave my mom a big hug and ever since I can’t keep the bow out of my hand. One of my 2021 goals is to make the National Youth Team to go to the World Archery Youth Championships in Australia. A long-term goal is to shoot a personal best at an international competition. Someday I would like to go to World Archery Youth Championships. What I love best about archery is when you look through your sight and see a fresh target face.

I have been shooting for six years and competing for five. My highest level of competition was Outdoor Canadian Nationals 2019, where I won silver, Iowa ISAA Pro-Am Tournament (2019) where I won bronze, Manitoba Indoor and Outdoor Provincials 2020, where I won gold for both and Regionals 2020 where I won gold. One of my most memorable moments in archery were taking part in Nationals and winning silver in 2019, when I made the Manitoba Provincial Team while shooting up a level, and travelling. My goals for 2021 are to shoot a perfect 300 and to continue competing. A long-term goal is to continue to medal in future competitions. Someday I would like to go to a larger competition such as Canada Games or World Youth Championships. What I like best about archery is being part of Team Manitoba and travelling. The fun times I have with my teammates.

Avril Hatherell
Provincial Head Coach
Coach Avril Hatherell is entering her third year with the Team Manitoba Program. Avril is a National Coaching Certification Program Competition Development Coach with years of experience as a former High-Performance Athlete. As a former Team Manitoba Athlete, Avril competed in two previous Canada Games Teams (2003/2007) and as a member of Team Canada competed at the World Youth Championship in 2002. In addition to Avril’s experience as an athlete and coach, her career path is in Physiotherapy. Avril graduated with a Masters of Science in Physical Therapy at the University of Alberta, having completed a Bachelors of Science in Genetics at the University of Manitoba. Avril enjoys treating all types of injuries from athletic to workplace to orthopedic.

Archery Manitoba is seeking member a member to fill a volunteer position on it’s Provincial 3D Committee.

Archery Manitoba and it’s current 3D Committee Members would like to thank Adam Lukin for serving the committee the past three years. Adam has brought valuable insight and leadership to our 3D community during his tenure.

2Purpose and Scope of CommitteeThe ARCHERY MANITOBA 3D Archery Committee is responsible for matters relating to the disciplines of indoor and outdoor 3D target archery within the Archers & Bowhunters Association of Manitoba.

The 3D Archery Committee reports to the Executive Committee on all matters surrounding the disciplines, including the organization of 3D Events and Provincial Team Programs. Members of the committee will evaluate and offer feedback regarding possible changes to the discipline, scoring and timing procedures, tournament conduct and rules, tournament equipment, and other relevant aspects. The committee offers guidance and drafts documents with the goal of assisting the organization & member clubs promote the discipline from the initiation to Provincial Team level.

The ARCHERY MANITOBA 3D Archery Committee consists of five (5) voting members elected to two-year terms and two (2) non-voting members. The committee will be chaired by the acting Vice President Events. The ARCHERY MANITOBA Executive Director will act as committee secretary. Nomination to the committee will be open to all ARCHERY MANITOBA Members through an application process. The selection of applications/nominees will be approved by the ARCHERY MANITOBA Executive Committee on recommendation by the acting Vice President Events.

All members ARCHERY MANITOBA 3D Committee must be current, active members of the ARCHERY MANITOBA.

Following the initiation of the committee, terms of membership shall begin on January 1st of the upcoming year, following selection by the Executive Committee.  Membership shall be staggered to assure continuity of the committee. In the initial year (2018), the committee terms will be staggered, three members will be selected to two year terms and two members will be selected to a one year term.

A quorum is defined as a majority of voting members of the ARCHERY MANITOBA 3D Committee.

4Responsibilities/DutiesDuties of the ARCHERY MANITOBA 3D Archery Committee

1.      In coordination with the ARCHERY MANITOBA Executive Committee, recommend revisions to ARCHERY MANITOBA Programs and Procedures relevant to 3D Archery.

2.      Review the Provincial 3D Program Document annually to ensure that strategies and goals are relevant to the betterment of the program.

3.      Prepare status reports and minutes of meetings or conference calls for review by the ARCHERY MANITOBA Executive Committee.

4.      Communicate with the President of the ARCHERY MANITOBA prior to taking action or sending out correspondence that impacts on ARCHERY MANITOBA program participants, members or member clubs.

5.      Communicate all pertinent document, goals and recommendations to the ARCHERY MANITOBA Executive Committee in a timely manner.

5Authority/Decision-MakingThe ARCHERY MANITOBA 3D Archery Committee has no authority to make final decisions. The committee’s mandate is to make recommendations & produce program documents for review and final approval by the ARCHERY MANITOBA Executive Committee.
6Meetings/SchedulesThe ARCHERY MANITOBA 3D Committee holds a minimum six (6) face-to-face meetings or telephone conference calls, throughout the year as necessary, to perform its functions. Likewise, some issues are discussed and resolved via email communications. The committee chair has the authority to schedule additional meeting if necessary.

Winners of 2020 Multi-Site Indoor Championships

“The official results for the 2020 Multi-Sites Indoor Championships of the Americas (MICA) were published on January 13, 2021.

More than 3400 archers from across the continent participated in the online competition which ran for the full year for the first time, starting on January 1 and ending on December 31, 2020. The extension from the normal six-month duration was due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Women competed in 15 different categories and men in 14. Cadet, junior, senior, master and para categories were all featured, as well as team rounds.” (Excerpt from World Archery Americas)

2020 Annual Award Nominations

Despite the many challenges faced in 2020, our archery community was provided the opportunity to have a limited indoor and outdoor season this past year.  During this time, there were notable performances in the Canadian Indoor Regional Championship, great local events, and well attended learn to shoot and development programs. This year Archery Manitoba has been forced to cancel our Annual Awards Banquet, and will provide online recognition to athletes, volunteers and coaches. Archery Manitoba will be awarding the Rising Star (Male & Female), Coach of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year Awards. In light of the limitation to compete in major out of province competitions in 2020, the 3D & Target Archer of the Year Awards will not be presented.

We ask that our members and partner clubs help us recognize deserving athletes, coaches and volunteers by online nomination by December 16, 2020.

Rising Star Award (Male and Female): In recognition of the Manitoba Youth Archers (Cadet & under) with the most outstanding achievement(s) in provincial, national or international archery in the past year.

Glenn Lewer Memorial Coach of the Year Award: Awarded to the Coach who has contributed the most to developing archery in the province of Manitoba during the previous year.

Roger Garrod Memorial Volunteer of the Year: Awarded to the volunteer who has contributed the most to developing archery with in the province of Manitoba during the previous year.

COVID-19 Update: Code Red

The Province of Manitoba announced that as of 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, the entire province will move to the critical level (red) on the #RestartMB Pandemic Response System to halt COVID-19 transmission and protect Manitoba’s most vulnerable citizens. All recreational activities, sports facilities, gyms and fitness centres must close.

The order to close all recreational facilities and suspend activities has forced Archery Manitoba and it’s members clubs suspend all programming and activities until further notice.

The Archery Manitoba Athlete Development Committee is responsible for matters relating to Learn to Shoot Programs, Target Archery Development Programs and Provincial Target Archery Team Programs, and Multi-Sport Games (Manitoba Games, North American Indigenous Games and Canada Games). Positions are on a two year term, expiring November 2022. The committee will be made up of a representative from each Sport Manitoba Region (East, North, South, West and Winnipeg or two (2) from Winnipeg in the event a regional rep position is left vacant) in addition to the Target Team Head Coach and an Athlete Representative. Prepare status reports and minutes of meetings or conference calls for review by the Executive Committee.

Communicate all pertinent document, goals and recommendations to the Executive Committee in a timely manner.

5Authority/Decision-MakingThe Athlete Development Committee requires Executive Committee approval relating to program document approval.

Notice of Special General Meeting

Archery Manitoba will be hosting a virtual Special General Meeting (SGM) on Wednesday October 28, 2020 at 6:30 PM via Zoom. All members are welcome to attend the meeting. The purpose of the SGM is to review and approve proposed amendments to the organization’s bylaws . Summary of Amendments

  • Page 1  – Acknowledge the organizations rebranding, to state the Archers & Bowhunters Association of Manitoba (primary registered corporate name) is also known as “Archery Manitoba”.
  • Page 1 – Updated all items referring to the Federation of Canadian Archers (FAC) (former name) to be named Archery Canada.
  • Page 1 – Updated all items referring to Federation of International Target Archery (FITA) (former name) to be named as World Archery.
  • Page 6 – Section “Officers” – This section has been amended to add eligibility of officers (executive committee members). The criteria is standard best practice of Provincial Sport Organizations.  The eligibility criteria added is as follows:

Eligibility of Officers – In order to be eligible for election as an officer, a candidate must:

Be a paid member in good standing of the ABAM.

  1. Be at least eighteen years of age, with power under law to contract.
  2. Consent to volunteer for the duration of the term in the executive committee position in which they are interested.
  3. Not have any known impediments which are likely to result in their removal during their term
  4. Be nominated by any two paid members no later than 20 days prior to annual general meeting and their nomination accompanied by a brief resume.
  5. Have no commercial conflict of interest within the sport of Archery. Although not exclusively a pre-requisite for eligibility, efforts should be made to have representation from all regions of the province.
  6. Attain the Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders Certification.
  7. Page 6 – Section “Officers” – The addition of the Past President to serve as a non-voting member of the executive committee. This addition is aimed to promote continuity and guidance for the leadership of the organization as term positions change.
  8. Page 9 – Section Meetings of the Members – Quorum for meetings of the members (Annual General Meetings & Special General Meetings) has been decreased from 20 voting members to 12 voting members, of which a minimum of 7 must be members of the board of directors (directors & officers).

2020/2021 Provincial Target Team Program

The program selection criteria has been designed to be more inclusive of development level athletes. The program will offer a high quality local training environment to ensure athlete progression, as well as increase involvement across both equipment disciplines and genders.

Due to the COVID19 pandemic’s impact on local, provincial and national events, the criteria has been modified in 2020 to allow current and new team members be a part of the program.

A summary of the qualifying criteria for existing and new team members is outlined below:

Qualifying for the 2020-2021 Archery Manitoba Provincial Team

Returning Team members from 2019-2020
All team members from the 2019-2020 year will retain their position on the team for the 2020-2021 year if they fulfill the following:
1) Must use Artemis and upload data to the Google drive as directed.
2) Demonstrate participation in physical training (cardio and weights)
3) Follow a training plan as developed with the coach.
4) Participate in team practices and qualifying training events during summer/fall 2020.

New Team Members for 2020-2021
1) Must contact the Provincial Coach: Avril Hatherell mbarcherycoach@gmail.com to communicate intent to join the program, to ensure the athlete has the information and support to proceed with team selection.

2) Participate in at least 2 provincially sanctioned 720 Round Tournaments in Aug/Sept 2020 and meet or exceed the minimum qualifying standards as defined below.

Funding Criteria for 2020-2021
• Funding will be based on two (2) levels; Elite and Development.

• Funding Levels for travel will be determined per event.

• Elite funding for summer 2021 (for Nationals): Due to the team selection qualification period falling in the previous outdoor season, the athlete will need to demonstrate a minimum of three (3) tournament scores that meet or exceed the Minimum Qualifying Scores (MQS) for Elite Team as a way to demonstrate they continue to shoot at an Elite Team level in the 2021 outdoor season prior to Canadian Nationals.

• Development team: May upgrade their funding status to elite team for the 2021 outdoor Canadian Nationals as long as they shoot three (3) tournament scores that meet or exceed the Minimum Qualifying Scores (MQS) for Elite Team as a way to demonstrate they continue to shoot at Elite Team before Canadian Nationals as a way to demonstrate their improvement.

• Funding to competitions outside of Manitoba is not guaranteed for archers attaining the Provincial Team Development Team.

• To be eligible for funding, Provincial Team Members are required to compete in the category in which they qualified.

As membership in the program does not guarantee athlete travel support funds, the organization will publish event specific team funding documents (addendum to the selection document), which will outline more specific criteria as to how travel funds can be earned. The organization will ensure that event specific criteria documents are communicated to the athletes in a clear and timely fashion. It is a program priority that athletes have a clear understanding of the criteria and their standing on the team.

Athlete funding selections will be by recommendation from the head coach, who will submit a report outlining the selection and funding recommendations to a group of unbiased Athlete Development Committee members.

Selection by the coach will be based on a combination of objective and subjective criteria as outlined in the Team Selection Criteria, as well as any additional event specific criteria as published. Our organization believes this process will ensure we are sending athletes that will most likely offer return on investment, whether the event goal be a development opportunity or to win medals.
