Waasayah Munro-Soldier wants more First Nations youth to compete

One of the top-ranked under-18 archers in Manitoba has her sights on a gold medal at the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) this month.

It is one of the first times she gets to compete with other young athletes that look like her.

Waasayah Munro-Soldier is Anishinaabe from Swan Lake First Nation, which is 156 kilometers west of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

She will compete in the 3D Archery event at the games, which take place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from July 15 to 23.

Waasayah hopes to inspire other Indigenous youth to try the sport.

“I’m competing against 120 [Indigenous] archers, but right now, I’m the only Indigenous female in Archery Manitoba,” Waasayah said in an interview with Kids News.

She’s also an impressive one — in 2022, she was ranked five out of 30 in Canada, in the under-18 rankings of target shooting.

Team Manitoba and Team Canada archers are gearing up for an exciting journey as they head to Limerick, Ireland, to compete in the highly anticipated 2023 World Archery Youth Championships. The event, scheduled to take place from July 3 to 9, will see young archers from around the globe showcasing their skills and vying for prestigious titles.

Representing Team Manitoba, Bailey Mathers will be competing in the U18 Compound Female category, while Ryder Wilson will showcase his talents in the U18 Recurve Male division. Ryan Cherniak and Chyler Sanders, both from Team Canada, will compete in the U21 Compound Male and U21 Compound Female categories, respectively.

The archers have been preparing rigorously for this event, honing their skills and fine-tuning their techniques. Their hard work and dedication will be put to the test as they face formidable opponents from various countries.

Fundraising for Youth Compound and Recurve Teams

The Canadian Archery Foundation has launched a fundraising campaign ahead of the World Archery Youth Championships, in support of the youth recurve and compound teams ahead to Ireland.

The Adopt-a-Team campaign is a way for you to support your friends and fellow archers as they gain international experience and reach their goals in a sport they are passionate about. Supporting archers by giving to their campaign efforts of raising money for their team is aiding in the development of amateur athletes nationwide, making it possible for them to compete and represent Canada abroad.

Your gift is helping to remove barriers to participation, which in turn allows the athlete to focus on improving their skills rather than the financial burdens associated with attending a high-level competition.

Archery Manitoba is seeking members to fill two volunteer positions on its Provincial 3D Committee.

If you or someone you know may be interested in serving on the 3D Committee, please see the position information and a link to a brief online application form below.

The committee comprises seven members, five voting and two non-voting (Provincial Team Leader and Executive Director).  The Archery Manitoba 3D Committee will hold a minimum six (6) face-to-face meetings or video/telephone conference calls, throughout the year as necessary, to perform its functions.

Archery Manitoba is proud to announce the relaunch of its MYGOLD Program (Manitoba Youth Games & Olympic Long-term Development) geared toward recurve and compound target archers of the intermediate to advance levels. The program will provide the tools and coaching to take archers from the advanced lessons and the ‘introduction to the competition stage to the level necessary to meet the criteria for Manitoba Games, Canada Games, and our Provincial Team Programs. The coaches leading the program will be Dale Bakker (Recurve), Cleo Wermann-Thorn (Recurve), Kelly Taylor (Compound), and guest coaches. All three lead coaches have extensive experience in provincial high-performance development as coaches or athletes training under provincial and national program coaches for several years. 

Overview: The program mandate is to provide a platform to re-implement material and coaching based on the Archery Canada/ Archery Manitoba High Performance ‘Top Camps’ hosted in 2019 and 2020 by National Coaches Shawn Riggs and Duncan Crawford.

Goal: The goal of this program is to provide coaching to developing youth recurve and compound archers via structured and professional programming. The objectives specific to this session are outdoor competition development, meeting Team Manitoba Criteria, and preparing for Outdoor Provincials. 

Focus:  Ensure participants have the tools to compete in indoor and outdoor events at increasingly higher levels, with the goal of multi-sport games participation (Manitoba Games, Canada Games, Provincial Team)

Program details:

The archers from Archery Manitoba’s Provincial Target Team showcased their exceptional skills and competitive spirit at Archery Canada’s 2023 Canada Cup West. The event, hosted by Timberland Bowbenders in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on June 10 and 11, witnessed the outstanding performances of the team members across various divisions and categories.

The team consisted of compound archers Austin Taylor, Bailey Mathers, Brady Klassen, Chyler Sanders, Ryan Cherniak, and Taylor Klimchuk. Recurve archers Cleo Wermann-Thorn, Kadin Giebelhaus, Ryder Wilson and Sarah May. As well as Para Compound archers Chris Waterman and Rob Cox and Team Manitoba 3D member Joel Brugger.

Led by coach Kelly Taylor, who stepped up in the absence of program coach Avril Hatherell, the team demonstrated their dedication and talent, securing podium finishes in every event they entered.

The compound archers from Manitoba proved their dominance in the mixed-team event, claiming both the gold and silver positions. Austin Taylor took home the gold, while Bailey Mathers and Joel Brugger earned well-deserved silver medals.

Not to be outdone, the recurve archers from Manitoba showcased their prowess as well. Cleo Wermann-Thorn and Kadin Giebelhaus secured the first-place position in the recurve mixed team event, followed by an impressive silver medal performance by Sarah May and Ryder Wilson.

Individually, the team continued to excel. Bailey Mathers earned a silver medal in the U18 Compound Female category, while Chyler Sanders clinched the gold in U21 Compound Female. Taylor Klimchuk rounded off the team’s achievements with a bronze medal.

In the compound male division, Austin Taylor emerged victorious, taking home the gold in the highly competitive U21 and 21+ field. In the recurve U21/U18 women’s event, Cleo Wermann-Thorn earned the gold, with Sarah May capturing the silver. Ryder Wilson displayed his talent in the U18 men’s recurve, earning a well-deserved bronze medal.

The exceptional performance of Archery Manitoba’s Provincial Target Team at the 2023 Canada Cup West is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and commitment to the sport. They have undoubtedly made their province proud and continue to inspire aspiring archers across Canada.

Prairie Bowhunters Archery Club of Portage La Prairie recently hosted an exciting outdoor 3D Archery event on Sunday, June 11 near Haywood, MB. The event drew in a turnout of over 40 archers, most of whom were new to 3D archery events. It was a fantastic opportunity for these beginners to experience the fun outdoor 3D archery has to offer.

The club’s annual event was relaunched after a hiatus, thanks to the tremendous efforts of dedicated volunteers Graham McCutchen, Susan, and Garry Glenn, along with the Perron Family, including Angela, Pat, and Alex. Garry Glenn, a seasoned member of the Manitoba 3D archery community with over 30 years of involvement, expressed his satisfaction with the event, stating, “We were pleased with the event and were impressed with the number who showed up that had never been out before.”

To facilitate the newcomers’ understanding of scoring, the organizers thoughtfully set up a target at the registration area. This allowed new shooters to grasp the intricacies of scoring before embarking on the course. The sight of these enthusiastic novice archers was truly heartening for the organizers.

In addition to the enjoyment and camaraderie, the club successfully raised funds to purchase a replacement 3D target, accomplishing their financial goal for the event. This achievement ensures that future archery events will continue to be well-equipped and offer archers the best possible experience.

Team Manitoba and Team Canada para archers, Chris Waterman and Rob Cox, are headed to the Nove Mesto 2023 Para-Archery European Cup. The World Archery para ranking event is set to take place from May 15 to 20,  2023, in the Czech Republic city of Nove Mesto. This year’s competition will be the first leg of the 2023 Para Archery European Cup.

The event promises to be an exciting competition, with para-archers from around the world gathering to showcase their talents and compete for the championship. The Nove Mesto 2023 Para-Archery European Cup is one of the most prestigious events on the international para-archery calendar and attracts some of the world’s top para-archers.

Chris Waterman and Rob Cox will be representing Team Canada at the event in preparation for the 2023 World Para Archery Championships in Pilsen, Czech Republic later this summer. Waterman, who hails from Clandeboye, Manitoba, has been a fixture on the Canadian para-archery scene for several years. He is a skilled archer whose goal is to represent Canada at the 2023 Para Pan American Championships later this year. Cox, from Winnipeg, has been a member of Canada’s national team going back to the early 2000s and has recently returned to international competition in hopes of competing at the Paralympic Games.

The competition will be tough, but both Waterman and Cox are determined to put on their best performances and make Manitoba and Canada proud. They have been training hard in preparation for the event, and are confident that their hard work will pay off.

The Nove Mesto 2023 Para-Archery European Cup promises to be an event worth following, with para-archers from around the world showcasing their skills and competing for the championship. The Heartland 3D Throwdown and 2023 Archery Manitoba Indoor 3D Provincial Championships took place on April 15 and 16 in Landmark, Manitoba, and were a resounding success. Archers from across Manitoba came together to showcase their skills and compete for cash prizes, while also raising funds for a worthy cause.

The Heartland 3D Throwdown, held on Saturday, April 15, was a new event that featured a best arrow two-archer team competition. With over 20 teams participating in categories such as U18, traditional, and compound, the event was highly competitive. The event boasted almost $2500 in cash prizes, which were awarded to the winning teams. However, it wasn’t just about the competition – the event also had a charitable aspect. Over $2000 was raised for the First Flight Introduction to 3D Archery Program, a worthy cause that promotes 3D archery among new archers. The event was made possible by the generous sponsorship of Shawn O’Donovan at Poplar Smoke BBQ and the silent auction sponsored by Lake of the Woods Sports Headquarters, Mathews, Bowtech, G5/Prime, X-Shot, Black Eagel, Brava Creations, and Firewire. Jeff Rozmus, who initiated and managed the event, deserves a special mention. The event was well attended by spectators, adding to its success, and Archery Manitoba would like to thank all the volunteers from the Heartland Archery Club and Smokin X’s Archery Club for their assistance. A special thank you goes to Kari Lafrance for playing a huge role in setup and the lunch fundraiser, Shannon Greer and Noel MacKinnon for running the welcome desk, and to Kevin Plett and Landmark Recreation for welcoming our event at the Landmark Arena on short notice. On Sunday, April 16, the 2023 Archery Manitoba Indoor 3D Provincial Championships took place, attracting some of Manitoba’s best shooters. The event saw a good balance of shooters across different age categories and equipment divisions, with a particular focus on known distance categories. One notable addition to this year’s event was the introduction of the Modern Bowhunter category, intended to serve as a stepping stone between Hunter and K50 categories. This addition provided an exciting new dimension to the championships, showcasing the diversity and inclusivity of the sport of archery in Manitoba.

Archery Manitoba would like to extend its gratitude to the officials and lead volunteers who worked tirelessly to organize and manage the event. Their dedication and hard work were instrumental in making the championships a success. Special thanks also go to Jeff Rozmus and the Heartland Archery Club for partnering to host event, and contributing to its success.

In conclusion, the Heartland 3D Throwdown and 2023 Archery Manitoba Indoor 3D Provincial Championships were a celebration of the sport of archery in Manitoba.
